Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE)
A well-developed upper jaw is the foundation for a beautiful, functional smile. One of the most effective ways to achieve this in growing patients is through Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE), a proven technique that gently widens the upper jaw to correct bite issues.

What is Rapid Palatal Expansion?
Rapid Palatal Expansion (RPE) is an orthodontic treatment designed to expand the upper jaw by applying gentle, consistent pressure over time. This is done using a custom-fitted device called a palatal expander, which is placed on the roof of the mouth and attached to the upper molars.
RPE is typically recommended for children and adolescents, when the growth plates in the jaw are still open and most responsive to change. The goal is to guide natural development and avoid more invasive treatments later on.

Why is palatal expansion needed?
When the upper jaw is too narrow, it can cause a range of issues, including:
Crossbite – when the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
Crowding – not enough space for permanent teeth to erupt properly
Impacted teeth – teeth stuck under the gums due to lack of room
Breathing issues – a narrow palate can affect nasal airflow

How does the palatal expander work?
The palatal expander is activated by turning a small key in the center of the appliance, usually once or twice per day. This creates gentle outward pressure on the upper molars, gradually widening the bone and mid-palatal suture.
Most patients wear the appliance for about 3 to 6 months, including a stabilization phase after expansion is complete.
