Upper Removable Braces (URA)
When most people hear ‘removable braces,’ they often think of clear aligners. However, Upper Removable Braces (URA) are a different type of orthodontic appliance we frequently use to treat children and teens, especially when their jaws are still growing and responsive to gentle adjustment.

Are Upper Removable Braces Right for You?
Treatment time: Takes around 3-9 months
Wear time: 24/7, only removed to eat and clean
Adjustments: Patients use a key to adjust the appliance weekly
Suitable for: Children, teens and adults (but mostly children and teens)
Cost: From £900

What are Upper Removable Braces?
URA braces are metal and acrylic plates designed to fit over the upper teeth and palate, gradually guiding teeth into better positions. This treatment is ideal for addressing minor to moderate orthodontic issues like crossbites, overbites and widening the upper jaw.
When first wearing URA braces, it’s normal to experience some initial discomfort and a slight lisp as your mouth adjusts. This adjustment period usually lasts just a few days. As your teeth begin to shift, you may feel mild pressure or soreness, which is a sign the treatment is working.

What URA braces are good for
URA braces are particularly effective for:
- Moving teeth sideways to correct a crossbite
- Widening the upper jaw
- Reducing or correcting an overbite
- Adjusting the tilt or position of specific teeth
While URAs work well for these mild to moderate concerns, they are not suitable for more complex orthodontic cases. In such situations, fixed braces may be a better option to achieve the best results.

URA FAQs
What do URA braces look like?
URA braces are removable orthodontic plates which fit over the upper teeth. They’re made from plastic or acrylic plates with wires and springs, which our orthodontists will use to move teeth.
Are removable braces effective?
Yes! Our orthodontists only recommend URA braces when they are the right fit for your specific tooth movement or bite correction needs. While they are less versatile than clear aligners, they are highly effective for targeted treatments in growing patients.
Do you eat with removable braces in?
No. Similar to clear aligners, URA braces should be removed when eating to protect the appliance and maintain good oral hygiene.
